Synopsis


Because the song I have chosen mainly focuses on relationships and social life and I will be focusing on exactly that. The music video will be based around a guy who has to take a road trip with his friends to meet his girlfriend who is at university somewhere else in the country. The video will start off with him at work receiving a text from his girlfriend asking when e is leaving he will reply and soon after his friends will pull up in a car. From there on the music video will constantly switch between shots of hi m and his friends in the car and the band playing the song with occasional shots of skating and some of the band members in other situations and environments.  Towards the end of the song the car will break down leaving the guy stranded with no way to get to his girlfriend but he notices a bike that has been abandoned and continues on his own without his friends. The video will then end when the couple have met showing the journey has been completed and showing the themes of the song as being in a relationship and having fun with friends.

Performer analysis


The style an image of all time low is one that is often general off all pop punk bands. They tend to promote fun and humour in their videos as well as with their image for example in photo shoots, album covers and interviews. They usually try to stick to a more “jeans and t-shirt” appearance as most pop punk bands do such as blink 182 and new found glory.  Their songs, are again, typical of the genre as they tend to sing about relationships and growing up.




As seen in the pictures, instead of coming acros as a serious band they attempt to show the audience they are fun and different in attempt to captivate peoples attention. This is normal for all bands of this genre as they like to appear different from normal bands.


Genearally All Time Low film in a studio or use "as live" footage. This is evident in alot of thier music vidoes such as weightless or even, in the song ive chosen, somewhere in neverland. This makes filming and editing alot easier as it is filmed in a controlled enviroment as well as allowing actors to be in the music video as oppose to the public making the process alot easier.

  • Talking about leaving college, growing up and getting a job and losing alot of your social life.
  • Feeing lost in life and dont know what direction to take also feel like your life has come to an end and tere isnt much else to do other than work and try to have fun at the weekends.
  • Saying how he wishes that he could start his life again. Possibly so he could chage things hes done wrong or just to have a more sucessful life or social life.
  • The chorus asking someon (possibly his grlfriend or someone he loves) to run away with him and maybe start a new life of thier own away from everything else to make a fresh start. Also makes a reference to peter pan with lines such as "i can be your lost boy" as well as the name of the song its self and a line in the chours of "somewhere in neverland"
  • Promising a new life with new people aside from the normal work colleagues in his normal day and life. also a juxtaposing line as he says "weekends with our friends laughing about the wine that stains thier teeth" promising amd dreaing of a better social life and more time with thier friends instead of it being taken up by work.
  • Saying how thier relationship will be better than her parents because they seperated meaning that he is promising that thier relationship will last and this is reinforced by when he says "ill say its all about sticking it out" meaning that no matter what happens they will stick together as well as instead of saying "singing forever young" he says "tring to be forever young" whch again ties in with th theme of peter pan and the lost boys.

The Purpose of Music Videos

Music videos are something we take for granted in recent years but they have only been around since 1975 when the first “real” music video was released by Queen with their song Bohemian Rhapsody. Since then the concept of the music video has taken the world by storm and nearly every band that has been signed by a record label, and even bands that haven’t are producing videos to accompany the music they make. In this essay I will be outlining who music videos promote, the strategies of marketing, how the artists and companies make their money and different media outlets.

Music videos are a massive part of the music industry as they help to promote, not only the artists, but record labels and directors too. There are many types of music videos that are made and a good example of the most popular music videos are ones that are “quirky” and “fun”. Ok Go is a good example of how a band can promote themselves but also the record label they are signed to in this case being Capitol Records. Ok Go have produced multiple videos that interest the viewer’s such as the popular dance on the treadmills video to their song Here It Goes Again. Music videos such as these interest people in the band’s music, their videos, as well as interests up and coming artists in the record labels and the director such as George Ant because they might want a music video similar to Ok Go’s video to promote themselves.

When watching a music video is will soon become evident whether or not the music is mainstream. Popular artists such as Rihanna and Justin Bieber will have very professional, polished music videos as to reflect their image. These music videos generally contain elements such as more extravagant special effects, back up dancers and a wide array of props. Usually these more well-known artists will be shown on MTV, ITunes and Spotify. Other, independent bands, will have a much lower budget to produce their music videos, they will have a much lower budget and due to this fact that they are not a well-known band they will have to upload their videos to a free video web hosting site such as YouTube to promote themselves also they won’t have as many special effects or extras, if any, to make their video look better however some low budget productions do make it to television however they don’t get shown during prime time television and are usually shown late at night or early in the morning. There is also the niche side to the music industry. Music videos such as Aphex Twins Window Licker is a video that won’t be shown during peak times due to its alternative content and videos such as these are usually shown during the early hours of the morning as videos such as these include content that is not suitable for everyone.

Payment is a big issue for record labels and artists and usually they will gain money through royalties. When an artist’s song is played on the radio or the video is played on, for example, television the artists of that particular song will be paid through royalties meaning every time a media outlet plays an artist’s song they must pay to do so. However it would be near impossible to keep track of how many people are watching a particular music video, so instead, record labels will take into account how popular a certain genre is, how well the artists earlier singles sold and other data to come up with a rough estimate of how much to pay the artists. Generally the more mainstream artists earn more money as they are played on the radio and music channels over and over again.


How we watch music videos has evolved throughout the past 10 years. Now we use the internet to view most music videos but we view them in a variety of different ways. A media outlet is the term used to describe devices such as televisions, laptops, computers, mobile phones anything that allows us to watch any form of media usually through use of the internet but also through the television as well. Due to the fact that there are now so many media outlets it allows the public to easily access music videos but also to share them with their friends also, websites such as YouTube allow new artists to publish their videos. Although it is a disadvantage that because so many people upload to sites such as YouTube every single day it’s very difficult to find those people who are truly talented as oppose to the people that do it for fun.

Synergistic marketing is a great way for record labels and other companies promote their product through the use of merchandising. A prime example of this would be High School Musical. When the film was first released it was incredibly popular and there was merchandise such as t-shirts, bed covers, posters, mugs almost anything. The High School Music producers will make a deal with, for example, a t-shirt company and say for every £5 t-shirt that is sold £2 of that price goes to the producers of the film. This is the same for music videos and tracks and for every time someone buys a t-shirt with the band logo for £5 then £2 of that goes to the record label. Synergy has been used by many other films and bands such as Simpsons, Star Wars, Batman and Pink Floyd. Synergistic marketing is a great way for companies to make the most out of their product and gain maximum profit by allowing other companies to use their brand name for a price. An example of this would be for All Time Low to allow a T-shirt company to use their band logo I exchange for payment.

Music videos have taken over since the first music video was introduced. If a song is produced by an artist now it would be very unlikely that song would be popular unless it had a music video attached to it and sometimes the music video makes the artist popular for example, LMFAO I’m Sexy and I Know It. The internet plays an integral part in the music and media industry as it allows a huge audience to view music videos at the click of a button. As well as this it encourages people to become musicians as they strive to create their own songs and videos and in conclusion the reason I think music videos are so popular is because they allow for creativity and simply they give you something nice to look at.

Comissioning essay

There are many job roles when It comes to the commissioning process such as commissioning editors, producers, directs script editors, agents and writers. A commissioning editor is the person who will filter through the ideas that come in and decides whether an idea is professional or relevant enough to be aired on television. Usually commissioning editors work within a specific style or genre allowing them to gain experience in that area and over time knowing what ideas have potential and which are ridiculous. They will usually supervise a production after they have given the go ahead for funding to make sure that the money isn’t going to waste. The producers also work alongside the commissioning editor and administrate areas such as finance, health and safety and legal issues. We then come to the director. It’s the director’s job to put across his vision to the rest of the crew to recreate the image in his head, they supervise everything practical that’s going on such as the camera crew, the talent, the props department, everything and anything that will be included in filming the director has a say in and its his job to take a majority of the responsibly when on site. There are also script editors. They will search through the script and make any changes that they feel would help the story appeal to the audience more depending on the genre. You also absolutely need an agent if you want to be commissioned because if you don’t have an agent it is unlikely you will become known and your work will not be recognised. An agent represents you and everything that you stand for; he will advertise you to the major companies and hopefully get them interested in your production. Finally there is the writer, he is the source of the idea, without the writer there would be no production. Sometimes the writer will sell his script straight off for money but other times he will stick around and oversee the project to make sure it goes according to his plan. They write the script and include all the characters, the locations and spill their ideas into the pages of the script.

Getting commissioned is the single most difficult for a writer. Many famous writers have admittedly failed when trying to get commissioned multiple times and have only been successful because of a “lucky break through in one of their ideas”. Corporations such as the BBC have set up websites specifically for new and upcoming writers such as “the BBC Writers Room”. This scheme helps new writers by telling them how they improve on their scripts and also if they like the script enough possibly pass it onto a corporation that might be interested or maybe recommend it to the BBC itself.

The BBC is commissioned by Ofcom a regulating body that enforces rules such as no swearing before 9pm on television and decides what would be and what won’t be suitable for television. Commissioning bodies are something writers need to keep in mind when creating a script or screenplay because if, for example, it contains too much bad language or in fact too strong bad language because if it does then Ofcom may decide to take it off the air or not even give it a chance at all. You could also pitch your idea to and independent production company. These companies are usually hired by bigger corporations, such as the BBC, to create a television series that would be suitable for an allocated time slot. A good example of this would be the hit T.V series Sherlock. Writers often sell their ideas to production companies straight away, take the money but then lose all power over what happens to the final product. Although some writers do work in calibration with television series directors to attempt to recreate the writers intended vision it almost never happens with screenplay writers when it comes to films.

The writer takes on a big responsibility if they are commissioned and allowed to work on the film. They will have a say in everything that happens from when the script leaves their hand from when they see it on the television. However, being able to work on our own screenplay is usually not an option for writers. After they have spent hours polishing their script they are put under enormous pressure to write new episodes or instalments of the production. They also get put under the pressure knowing that their idea will inevitably be warped or changed depending on the directors vision because most film companies see it as a waste of time and feel the writer will get in the way.

As a writer copyright is a big issue. I’m sure that everyone has seen a movie that resembles another movie that they had seen some time ago but sometimes screenplays and films become to similar and they begin to cross the line of plagiarism and copyright. This can be dangerous for writer because not only can it result in court, being fined or jail it can also give the writer a bad reputation within the film community and due to the fact that it’s already hard enough to get screenplays noticed it would be a tremendous fall-back.

In conclusion working as a writer is immensely difficult to break into. Even if you’re the best writer in the world it will still take some time to become noticed. An agent is probably the best way that you can break into working as a writer as he will help you gain contacts and possibly put you in touch with some of his contacts with commissioning bodies and independent production companies. As a freelance writer, which is 89% of all writers, usually you will sell your script to a production company and collect a payment for your script and this happens a majority of the time. An advantage to this though would be that after the production company has brought the rights to your script they can only use it for the allotted time that they brought it for. So even if the company brought your script for 2 years unfortunately you would not be able to sell those rights to anyone else within those 2 years, but once that time is up, you can begin looking for another company that may be interested. Becoming a writer is a very time consuming, stressful and rewarding feat but once accomplished gives a very high sense of achievement. Most writers, even famous writers now admit that it is a very difficult industry to break into. You have to have the right amount of luck, skill and determinedness to succeed and to make a living from it is even harder.

Single camera production techniques

In this essay I will be explaining and defining the effectiveness of single camera use. I will also be explaining the advantages and disadvantages of single camera productions as well as the main elements that it impacts such as the cost, the time schedule and the practicality.

The term “single camera production” usually means that any production such as an advertisement, animation, short or feature length film is shot using a single camera. There are many reasons that a single camera is used in a lot of productions, the main reason being the “feel” that it gives to the viewer. As oppose to multiple cameras being placed around a set and then being edited together later a single camera gives freedom to get close to the action to capture the required shot, allowing the single camera production to have a more personal touch to it and allows directors to have much more control over the out come of a scene. A good recent example of a Television series that uses a single camera is My Name Is Earl, however There are also some downfalls to a single camera production. Because there is only one camera the process of shooting a shot can become very tedious for example, say the director wanted a medium shot of the scene and a high angle long shot then the scene would have to be shot twice all the way through whilst one of the shots is framed and then having to move to another shot and repeat the process. This unavoidable method when using a single camera can become very time consuming and therefore impacts the products production schedule as well as its overall time scale. Another issue when filming with a single camera is the cost of the film. Due to the amount of times a scene and separate scenes must be shot the amount of film that is used soon adds up. This also becomes very expensive and is a hurdle that any production company must over come. Something that does however allow single camera production to exceed is the fact that there isn’t always just a single camera. If there is a shot where there is a lot of action or heavy dialogue another camera may be brought in to allow continuity to flow better and to avoid any errors that may occur.

Sound and lighting is important to any production. When filming for a multi camera production it is fundamental that all lighting is consistent throughout the shots in a scene. This though is not the case when it comes to single camera filming. Because of the freedom that comes with the single camera it allows the director to light the shots individually and not have to worry about the continuity of the scene. This can reduce cost in many places as the production company will not have to waste their production budget on lights, instead they can use a single light and a reflector or even just natural light to brighten up the shot.

Sound is also another key aspect to any production. Because single camera productions are usually shot with a very low production budget they have to capture the sound when they are on set. Single camera productions are awkward in this sense but it does allow for the time scale for filming to be shorter as the actors won’t have to record sound in a studio separately such as high budget films like The Avengers (2012). A good technique for recording sound is to use a HD camera to film the visuals and to use a separate camera and an external recorder such as a boom mic to capture sound. You could also use a clapperboard which allows the editor to line up the audio and visual, saving time in the editing process. Something else that would help in the editing process would be to leave some time, usually 3-4 seconds, before a shot starts and after a shot has ended. This allows the editor to avoid any jumpy starts or ends that might sneak into the footage otherwise. A clear advantage from a single camera production is that there will be much less footage. Because there isn’t several different cameras filming one scene the editor will have a much lighter work load resulting in quicker production time.

Structure is also important and even more so when using a single camera as there is much less room for error. The main areas that you must think about when structuring a production are the story (where are you going with it, what you hope to achieve, is the story linear or non-linear), The characters ( who will appear in your production, how old do they have to be, what do they have to look like) and finally the genre ( is it a drama, a comedy or a horror ect…). There are many fields that can easily be overlooked when creating a single camera production as it takes a bit more planning than a multi camera production. As well as being able to create a structure it also allows directors to work in calibration with the writer to create a completely fluid piece that the writer feels fits well with his vision of the script. It also allows for easier chance of angle and set if the writer or director change their minds at the last minuet.

Genre and style is probably the most important aspect when filming as it allows the director to decide what lighting and what shot type is needed. You wouldn’t go flooding the set with light if you’re trying to shoot for a climatic horror scene so its vital that the production team keeps the style and genre in mind at all times. Narrative also goes hand in hand with genre and the way the narration is laid out for the audience is extremely important. There are multiple different types of narrative, the most obvious and common of these being a linear story line. A linear story line follows a typical start to end story with no flashbacks or reminiscence on previous events such as in the film Starsky and Hutch (2003). Other films follow a more complex story and is called a non-linear story line. Films that feature this type of narrative are films such as The Social Network (2010) and Batman Begins (2005). These films do have a beginning middle and end, however, they may be seen at certain times for example, the end of the film could be shown at the start and the rest of the film could be the run up to the finale. As well as this they can also include flashbacks detail past events and situations.

Its also important when creating a structure you decide weather its going to be a series, a serial or a one off. A series is a production that has a set contract to produce a number of episodes over a certain period of time for example, 40 episodes over the space of a year. A serial is a production that has no end in the foreseeable future. This is usually because the product has been running for a long time and is evident in soap operas such as Eastenders. Finally a one off production is, for example, a drama that runs over 2 or 3 episodes and the plot unfolds and ends within those episodes alone.

In conclusion a single camera production has many advantages such as it gives the audience a more enjoyable experience and allows them to be absorbed into the created world more easily. It also allows for much less lighting to be needed reducing cost as well as the sound to be slightly more fiddly but reduces the time scale for the productions. Although single camera production is usually the preferred method for a lot of directors multi camera is still much quicker and practical. Yes, single camera production allows for locations to be moved to more efficiently but it doesn’t have the speed of a multi camera production and is much more likely to accidently incorporate some continuity errors. On a whole multi camera productions take much less time than single camera but that’s only if you’re going for quality over quantity. If you do infact stick with and favor the single camera production the quality of the finished product will far exceed that of anything else and, although it isn’t as cost or time effective it certainly is the better choice if you want the audience to engage with the finished product.

Silent witness questions:

In the opening scene of this episode called choices we see Modest, the nightclub owner, in the car with his fiancĂ© Helen to whom he has recently become engaged to. They both then step out of the car, Modest goes one way and Helen goes to talk to Modest’s sister Simone outside the nightclub. A car then drives by and starts to shoot a sub machine gun at the club from one of the windows. Everyone outside the nightclub panics and tries to get down but inevitably people are killed. A man is shot in the back as he attempts to run away and Helen is shot and killed which we find out later on was actually an accidental shot fired from Modest as he pulls his own gun out to return fire he puts too much pressure on the trigger, the bullet hits the floor, ricochets and kills Helen.

For this programme I personally feel that, based on the fact it is a drama, it primarily targets middle class women aged between 35 and 55 but due to the crime thriller element of this programme is drags the primary genre more towards the middle allowing men to enjoy it just as much as women. As a secondary audience I would think that it would be for the elder age ground for around 55-70. The reason that I have chosen an older age group as the secondary audience as oppose to the younger age group is because I feel that few teenagers or young adults would take time out to regularly watch and follow the episodes and therefore this programme should really be aimed at the middle aged/ older audience.


In this episode I really did enjoy the fact that as they try to solve the crime they uncover more and more information which takes the team on different routes like the branches of a tree unfolding and then that information allowing them to solve the crime by solving other smaller puzzles along the way. I would try to include a similar story line such as this in my own screenplay as it engages the audience and keeps their interest.


The one thing I disliked about the episode is how clunky and unsatisfying the dialogue was. I’m not sure as to whether this was down to the physical scripting of the episode or if it was down to the delivery of the lines but I didn’t believe the dialogue at all and this took away from the characters and stopped me from enjoying the programme as well as I could. I would definitely avoid awkward dialogue in my own screenplay as it distracts the audience and also lets the storyline down.


Edge of Darkness questions:

In the opening scene we see a train go past in the middle of the night with some sort of important containers on, most probably critical to the storyline later on. We then see three people talking in an almost empty room with many chairs laid out. The three men then leave the room, get in separate cars and are driven away by police officers so it’s clear that these three men are also policemen. We then see Emma Craven in a room of people which seem to be some sort of group. The meeting then ends and Emma is picked up by her dad, Ronald Craven. They arrive home and get out of the car to go indoors where they are met by an armed man who says “Craven bastard” he then aims a gun but Emma steps forward and shouts “don’t” she is then shot, Ronald then holds Emma as she is dying and in her final breath says “don’t tell”.


The primary audience for this programme would probably be males and females aged between 30-50. This is because this programme needs an audience

Script Proposal

                                  

The name for my proposed script is called Amnesia. It follows the story of an 18 year old boy called Luke stone who one day wakes up in hospital surrounded by, what he thinks, are his family and remembers nothing from the events before. Luke soon comes to realize all is not as it seems and he is left betrayed and alone. He learns that he is a sleeper agent trained by the British government to fight against the opposing, power hungry corporation who threaten to over throw the government. Eventually he becomes stuck in the middle of them both and must choose which side to stand on.

The genre for Amnesia will be an action drama the reason i decided to chose this because it appeals to wide range of people. My primary target audience will be working and middle class males and females aged between 16-25 the reason for this is because the action and drama within Amnesia will be aimed at a teenage to young adult audience. The secondary audience will be working and middle class males and females aged between 25-30 the reason for this is because some people may still be interested in the story and genre but due to how the genre is targeted some of the older views may lose interest. As well is drawing in a large part of the teenage audience i feel that this particular television series has a very unique selling point in which that it is a British made, high concept television series made for both the female and male audience.

By creating this television series i hope to create an exciting, new and clever narrative that will always keep the audience on their toes and making them ask "what happens next?" i want to create a fresh story and impress the audience.

When writing the story i would like to keep a lot of naturalistic dialogue to make the whole production seem smooth however it is sometimes the case that when watching a film or television series sometimes the naturalistic dialogue seems clunky and awkward that is why i would mix naturalistic dialogue with non-naturalistic to allow the audience to listen to the production easily without being thrown off by certain phrases or word patterns.

The main character for this script is Luke Stone. He is a sleeper agent trained by the government and fights along side them to take down the oppressing corporation. He has no recollection of who he is or what hes capable of and continues on to find out who he really is and the story behind his life. I see the character of Luke to be an 18 year old quiet boy at first who, after learning what he is capable of, becomes a lot more confident and cocky in his attitude towards the world almost like Peter Parker from the spider man franchise.

Another main character is Christopher Grey. He is the head of the oppressing organization that threaten to take over the government. He is a middle aged man around 40 years old, his main goal is to direct the organization to gain power over all political figures and infiltrate the British government in hope of taking them down.

script synopsis

Luke Stone wakes up in a hospital bed from a coma surrounded by what he thinks are strangers. They explain to Luke that they are his family and after a little conversation and question asking Luke goes home with his family. A few days go past as normal other than a few strange occurrences that Luke notices. When Luke is a college on the second day he is being bullied traditionally for being new. Throughout the day the Bully known as Jake Simmons pushes Luke to his limits by barging him in the corridor, throwing objects at him and generally physically and vocally abusing him. On his way out of college Luke is tripped up by the Jake but this time Luke stands up to confront him. The two boys have an argument which eventually results in Jake punching Luke in the face, knocking him to the ground. Luke stands up again with a cut lip and prepares to take another punch but as Jake goes to swing at Luke he blocks it, counters and knocks Jake to the ground with a combination of impressive combat manoeuvres without Luke having any knowledge of how or what just happend. A teacher at the college then bursts through the crowd and shouts at Luke to get inside. Luke’s parents are called which results in a conversation with the teacher and Luke being taken home and sent up to his room. Luke is sat on the end of his bed when suddenly two armed men burst into his room and drag him downstairs with his parents just watching the events unfold. A bag is then put over Luke’s head as he is transported to a different location. When the bag is pulled from his head Luke finds himself  tied to a chair with a man stood in front of him in a suit. The man asks Luke many questions that he simply cannot answer eventually the man walks away and orders the two armed men to kill Luke. In retaliation Luke breaks free from his chair and takes down the two men without even knowing how he has done it. He then runs out of the room into the streets and begins to sprint as far as he possibly can but he is disturbed by police sirens. Multiple police cars then pull up either side of him, Luke gives up and gets on the ground with his hands behind his head, ending the first episode.
